Emerging Issues Forum

“Every Australian has a right to have their life enriched by sport.”

In our recent Forum on transgender inclusion, we took a close look at how the sports sector is leading the way in Australia in welcoming and celebrating gender diversity, particularly on a community level, as well as the specific challenges they are encountering.

The panel:

  • Dr David Hughes, Chief Medical Officer, Australian Institute of Sport
  • Ro Allen, Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Communities
  • Erica James, transgender cricketer and advocate

WHAT YOU CAN DO

“When I joined my club, I got a new family.”

The panel came up with a list of ways to be more inclusive of gender diverse people in sport (and beyond).

  1. Talk to trans and gender diverse people about their experiences (if they are open to it)
  2. Read reliable sources about transgender issues
  3. Download and read the Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport
  4. Share your knowledge and experiences of gender inclusion and exclusion
  5. Step up and be an ally
  6. Add to the research and evidence
  7. Approach state sporting bodies and local LGBTIQ+ community groups for support
  8. Check out Pride Cup
  9. Have an open mind to every human being
  10. Do nothing about us without us!
